Biological methods of purification of land contaminated with petroleum substances.
Brownfield sites often pose a serious problem for local communities due to contamination with petroleum products. By using a biopreparation to clean contaminated soil, it is possible to achieve the following benefits:
- pollutants are a source of energy needed for their neutralization,
- there is complete and direct decomposition of pollutants, not their transfer between different media (often observed in the case of physicochemical methods),
- the use of metabolic pathways and cycles of microorganisms leads to the final products of transformation, i.e. H2O and CO2,
- the use of selected microorganisms allows the recultivation time to be shortened from many years to several to several months,
After the completion of the soil bioreclamation process, due to the exhaustion of pollutants that are a source of carbon for specialized microorganisms, the strains that are part of the biocenosis of the biopreparation spontaneously die off. Conditions for the development of natural soil microflora are created in the cleaned soil.
What exactly is bioremediation? Simply put, it is a technology for removing pollutants using microorganisms. This method is used primarily in the context of contaminated water (lakes, ponds or groundwater) and land. We are talking here largely about post-industrial environments or those that have been directly or indirectly affected by the negative impact of industry - the area around factories, garbage dumps, sewage treatment plants or metallurgical areas. What pollutants are we talking about? The main causes of water and land contamination are oil spills, heavy metals and various types of waste from heavy, fuel and energy industries.
How does bioremediation of water and land take place?
The bioremediation process performed by our company is based on the individual selection of microorganisms with the most favorable specificity for a given type of pollution. The key here is to use the native bacterial flora that already exists in a given area. This, in turn, is applied to the ground in the form of condensate.
This method therefore uses natural soil purification processes involving bacteria. The difference here, however, is time - instead of tens, and often hundreds of years, we are talking about a much shorter period (depending, however, on individual conditions).
To clean contaminated areas, it uses microorganisms that draw energy from a given type of contamination - thanks to this, the microorganisms will simply die after the process is completed. The advantage of this solution is the fact that the contamination is completely degraded and not (as in the case of many other methods) only transferred in the form of another medium. The by-products of the process are only water, carbon dioxide and dead organisms (in a form reminiscent of quartz sand).
Another benefit of this bioremediation method is its versatility - an individual approach to each implementation guarantees better results, both ex-situ (applying the material to the excavated soil) and in-situ (directly to the ground). The possibility of using both types of bioremediation significantly increases the range of applications.
We provide comprehensive activities and services covering the entire land and groundwater remediation process. Complete service includes:
Analysis of the type and extent of contamination
Recommendation of the optimal bioremediation method
Selection of the selected type of biomaterial for the needs of a specific case
